Athens, Ga. – Paul Schempp, director of the University of Georgia Sport Instruction Research Laboratory, has received the E. W. Barker Professorship in Physical Education and Sport Science from the National Institute of Education in Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University.
Schempp, a professor of physical education in the College of Education’s department of kinesiology, will be in Singapore in late winter.Planned topics for lectures presented by Schempp during this time period include “The Skills and Characteristics of Expert Sport Instructors,” “The Three Keys to Developing Elite Athletes,” and “Developing Expertise in Youth through Sport and PE.”
The professorship invites world-class researchers and other renowned individuals to look into the needs and practices in sporting Singapore. Its purpose is to shareexpertise with athletes, teachers, coaches and academicians in physical education and sport, and promote collaborative research between PESS, Singapore Sports Council, the Singapore Sports School, the Singapore National Olympic Council and other universities.The professorship was created in 2002 in honor of the late E.W. Barker and his contributions as a statesman, scholar, sportsman and supporter of sports.
“I’m very honored to have received such a prestigious distinction,” said Schempp. “Singapore as a culture values the highest standards of scholarship, and for a distinguished body of learned individuals to select me from a large pool of possible candidates is humbling.”
Schempp has spent more than a decade conducting award-winning research into the characteristics and development of teaching expertise. He is the author of seven books, including the recently published 5 Steps to Expert, over 100 articles, and has delivered more than 200 presentations in 26 countries.
In 2004, Schempp was named a Distinguished Scholar by the International Center for Performance Excellence at West Virginia University. He served as a visiting professor at the National Institute of Education in Singapore in 2001 and as a Senior Fulbright Research Scholar at the University of Frankfurt, Germany, during 1991-92.
Schempp joined the UGA faculty in 1991. He earned an Ed.D. in human movement from Boston University, an M.S. in physical education from Ithaca College, and a B.S. in physical education from the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut.
