Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia Lamar Dodd School of Art director, Georgia Strange, was elected to the Board of Directors of the College Art Association for the 2011-2015 term. The announcement of Strange and three other new board members came during the CAA 99th annual conference in New York City this month.
Founded in 1911, the College Art Association is the preeminent professional organization in the U.S. for scholars and practitioners of art, art history and art criticism. With more than 13,000 members throughout academia and all areas of professional art practices, the CAA aims to promote excellence in scholarship and teaching of the visual arts, and in creativity and technical skill in the teaching and practices of art.
The 21-member board is comprised of professionals in the visual arts who are elected by the membership to serve four-year terms. The board is charged to guide CAA’s long-term financial stability and strategic direction, and to serve as the association’s governing body. The board sets policy regarding all aspects of CAA’s activities, including publishing, the Annual Conference, awards and fellowships, advocacy, and committee procedures.
Strange earned an undergraduate degree in biological sciences and graduate degrees in science education and fine arts from Indiana University. She held teaching positions at Centre College of Kentucky, Ohio State University and Indiana University prior to her appointment at UGA. Her international experience includes working for the Peace Corps in Liberia, West Africa; participating on an archaeological excavation in Greece; and studying and teaching in Italy. She was awarded the Masters Fellowship from the Indiana Arts Commission and several competitive research grants at the universities where she taught. In addition to many venues across the country, Strange’s sculptural work is exhibited at SOHO20 Gallery in New York, where she has been a member since 1990.
“As a member of CAA for many years who has directly benefitted from the vision and impact of this premier arts organization, I was humbled to be chosen as a CAA board member,” Strange said. “In my advocacy for the arts in higher education, I promote the timely relevance of fostering creative ideas and approaches in academia, professional practices, and daily actions that are applicable to any field, and I look forward to working actively with CAA to propel the reach of the arts.”
