Sculptor Donald Lipski to lecture at Lamar Dodd School of Art

Athens, Ga. – Sculptor Donald Lipski will be speaking at the University of Georgia Lamar Dodd School of Art on Oct. 12 at 5:30 p.m. The lecture, part of the Visiting Artist and Scholar Lecture series, will be presented in room S151. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.

Lipski, who came to prominence in 1979 with his Museum of Modern Art installation “Gathering Dust,” has exhibited work in galleries and museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney, the Menil Collection, and the Art Institute of Chicago. He also has received several awards and honors, including the Guggenheim Fellowship, the National Endowment for the Arts award, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Academy award, and the Rome Prize.

“I strive to both seduce and challenge the viewer, to provoke wonder and delight,” says Lipski. “[I strive] to lead viewers to question, to make their own metaphors.”

Known for his inventive combinations of existing objects and process-oriented art, Lipski’s recent works include a chandelier for the new Sacramento airport terminal, a sculpture entitled “The Ziz” at the Cleveland Indians ballpark, and an installation entitled “Leaves of Grass” at the Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina.

“Lipski has this way of juxtaposing materials in his smaller-scale works to make something new,” says Lauren Cunningham, an M.F.A. student from Atlanta, studying sculpture in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. “I love the way he can combine two materials that seem like they shouldn’t go together to create something poetic and beautiful.”
