Richard Siegesmund to exhibit photographs at the UGA Odum School of Ecology Gallery

Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia Odum School of Ecology Gallery will host an exhibit of photographs by Richard Siegesmund, associate professor of art education at the Lamar Dodd School of Art, March 18 – April 8. The exhibition, titled “San Luis de Monteverde: Luminosity in life and decay,” showcases a series of digitally-layered photographs created by Siegesmund while he was the Willson Center Artist in Residence at the UGA Ecolodge San Luis in Costa Rica in 2009.An opening reception for the exhibition will take place on Thursday, March 18, 5-7 p.m.Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Siegesmund explained that the photographs embody the intersection of art and science, exploring the connections between visual patterns that unfold in time and the ecological processes that underlie and inform them. His conversations with ecology faculty members in residence at the Ecolodge helped illuminate the relationship between his work and their research, leading to the desire to explore those linkages more thoroughly, and providing the impetus for exhibiting the photographs at the Odum School Gallery.

“We are very pleased to be exhibiting Richard Siegesmund’s work at the Odum School Gallery,” said John Gittleman, dean of the Odum School of Ecology. “It is important to find new ways to convey scientific exploration and discovery, and that is exactly what Richard does with these works. We hope the Odum School Gallery will play an important role in encouraging further discussion about the connections between art and science.”

This exhibit is possible through a grant from the Jane and Harry Willson Center for Humanities and Arts.
