Athens, Ga. - The Terry College of Business Society for Management Information Systems, a student organization at the University of Georgia, was honored as the national "2010 Student Chapter of the Year" by the Association for Information Systems.
AIS, which was founded in 1994, is a professional society that has as its purpose to serve as the premier global organization for information systems. Through a recent initiative, AIS has affiliated with student chapters in the United States and abroad, and more than 3,000 students are already associated with the group's student chapters.

The Terry College's SMIS chapter received its award at the annual meeting of the International Conference on Information Systems recently held in St. Louis.

"Credit for this national recognition goes to all of the student members of SMIS, but especially to Chris Sanders, who was the chapter president for the past two years and volunteered a lot of time to the start-up of the student chapter initiative with AIS," said Mark Huber, faculty adviser to the Terry SMIS chapter.

"This award is a crowning accomplishment for the Society for Management Information Systems chapter at UGA," added Huber. "SMIS has a 27-year track record of student success, going back to when Hugh Watson was the chapter's first faculty adviser, and I'm happy for the students who took the initiative to keep building on that success."

The Chapter of the Year award is the highest honor given to a student chapter by AIS. The AIS awards program honors multiple chapters annually. The selection committee judged student chapters on several criteria, including professional development, membership, careers in information systems, community service, fundraising and communications.

The Terry College SMIS chapter received a cash grant with its award. Also receiving cash grants from AIS were the Distinguished and Outstanding Student Chapter award winners. The 2010 AIS Distinguished Student Chapters were from Arizona State University, Indiana University and the University of Michigan at Dearborn. This year's AIS Outstanding Student Chapters included Brigham Young University, Temple University, Texas Christian University, the University of Alabama and the University of Colorado at Denver.
