Athens, Ga. - The 30th annual meeting of the Southeast Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians will be held Oct.18-20 at the Classic Center in downtown Athens. Approximately 55 papers will be presented in the 15 paper sessions offered. Mark Reinberger of the University of Georgia College of Environment and Design will serve as conference chair.
Richard Guy Wilson of the University of Virginia will be the keynote speaker on Oct. 18 at 4 p.m. in the auditorium of the UGA Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Libraries. His address will be titled "Edith Wharton's Architectural and Literary Revolution." Following the lecture, the UGA College of Environment and Design will host a reception in its Founders Memorial Garden with music provided by Ruby Kendrick of Athens. The event is free and open to the public.
The conference will feature the screening of a new documentary, "Unfinished Spaces," about the National Art Schools of Cuba on Oct. 19 from 4:30-6 p.m. at Ciné in downtown Athens. Annual meeting registrants may attend this screening as part of the conference; the general public will be charged $10 admission.
The meeting will conclude Oct. 20 following two tours. UGA architect Danny Sniff will guide members through notable modern buildings on the UGA campus; and, later in the day, attendees will travel to Madison for a tour, led by Monica Callahan and Ken Kocher, of selected ante- and post-bellum buildings. The cost of the tour is $40.
The Southeast Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians is a regional chapter of the national Society of Architectural Historians. SESAH was founded in 1982 at Georgia Tech in Atlanta to promote scholarship on architecture and related subjects and to serve as a forum for ideas among architectural historians, architects, preservationists and others involved in professions related to the built environment.
