Black Male Leadership Society receives top student organization award

The Black Male Leadership Society was named UGA's "Organization of the Year" during the 14th Annual H. Gordon and Francis S. Davis Student Organization Achievement and Recognition Awards

 

Athens, Ga. – The Black Male Leadership Society was named the University of Georgia’s “Organization of the Year” during the 14th Annual H. Gordon and Francis S. Davis Student Organization Achievement and Recognition Awards, given out April 8 at the Tate Student Center.

The SOAR Awards celebrate the accomplishments of student organizations at UGA.

“I am incredibly proud of the work the Black Male Leadership Society has done this year within our community, across campus and within the Athens community,” said Charles E. King, a senior education major from Atlanta and chief executive officer for the society.

Other award categories and their recipients are as follows:

• Adviser of the Year: Sheila Neely-Norman, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
• Bulldog Vision: Madison Turner, Student Government Association.
• Candice Sherman Emerging Leader: Hannah Middlebrooks, Lambda Alliance.
• Commitment to Social Justice: Indian Cultural Exchange.
• Large Event: Vietnamese Student Association for Night in Saigon 11.
• Small Event: Language and Literacy Education Graduate Organization for its departmental symposium.
• Innovative Initiative: Dawgs for Diabetes.
• New Organization: Women in Science.
• Organizational Collaboration: HEROs, Miracle at UGA, Relay for Life.
• Organizational Improvement: MEDLIFE.
• Pillar of the Community: Campus Kitchen at UGA.
• Service to the Community: Designated Dawgs.
• Cross-Cultural Awareness: Zeta Pi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.

This year, 170 nominations representing 70 student organizations were submitted for the 14 award categories. A panel of 28 faculty and staff members judged the nominations.
