Athens, Ga. - Tom Burke, a long-serving administrator in the University of Georgia Division of Student Affairs, has been named interim vice president for student affairs.

Burke has been associate vice president for student affairs and an adjunct assistant professor in the College of Education since 2000. His appointment as interim vice president was announced by Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Jere Morehead and is effective April 1.

"I appreciate Dr. Burke's willingness to serve as interim vice president for student affairs while we conduct a national search," Morehead said. "His thorough knowledge of the university and commitment to the success and well-being of students will ensure a smooth transition."

Burke, who is not seeking a permanent appointment as vice president for student affairs, holds a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Asheville and a master's degree and doctorate from Florida State University. Before coming to UGA, he served as dean of student life at Middle Tennessee State University and was associate director of student life at the University of Alabama.

Earlier this month, Morehead appointed a search committee to conduct a national search for the university's next permanent vice president for student affairs. The committee is chaired by Jennifer Frum, vice president for public service and outreach, and is being assisted by the UGA Search Group in Human Resources.

Rodney Bennett, who has served as vice president for student affairs since 2005, was recently named the incoming president of the University of Southern Mississippi.
