UGA’s Torrance Center for Creativity to host two summer camps

UGA's Torrance Center for Creativity to host two summer camps

Athens, Ga. – The Torrance Center for Creativity and Talent Development, based in the University of Georgia’s College of Education, will host an exciting summer camp for Athens area elementary students and co-host a summer art intensive for local high school students.

Camp Invention

Camp Invention is a weeklong day camp for children in grades K-5. The camp focuses on creativity and provides a unique opportunity for children to experience hands-on learning through fun activities.

The camp features the Innovate program of the nonprofit Invent Now Kids in which campers will:

  • build their own motorized creature and learn about alternative sources of energy; help save the avatars of an endangered online virtual world by creating, marketing and selling goods in an extraordinary marketplace;
  • explore the surprising connections between soap bubbles, honeycombs and lightning;
  • take apart a broken machine and see what’s inside. Younger children will create fantasy inventions, while older groups will work on a team Rube Goldberg challenge that creates a “mini-explosion;”
  • explore cultures from around the world by discovering the link between ancient games and those we play today.

Camp Invention will be held at the Driftmier Engineering Center at UGA May 24-28 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration is $299 per camper. More details and online registration are available at: www.coe.uga.edu/torrance/.

CREATE! Torrance Summer Art Intensive

CREATE! Torrance Summer Art Intensive is a weeklong residence program for 9th-12th-grade students who are talented in the visual arts, conducted by the Torrance Center for Creativity and the Lamar Dodd School of Art at UGA June 6-12.

The camp is designed to bring together a group of visual arts-oriented teenagers who will form a community in which they can create and explore visual thinking in ways they may not have been able to in a normal high school setting.

Students will reside in UGA’s East Campus dormitories and attend studio classes at the new Lamar Dodd School of Art. The summer art intensive will include courses focusing on printmaking, mixed-media, sculpture, bookmaking, fabric design and ceramics that are taught by both professors and graduate students from the Lamar Dodd School of Art, as well as visiting art educators. Students will also participate in creativity workshops led by professors and graduate students of the Torrance Center for Creativity.

Mary Stewart, the Foundations Program Director for the Art Department at Florida State University, will be CREATE!’s 2010 Keynote Speaker. Stewart, the author of Launching the Imagination—a widely used college visual arts textbook—regularly gives workshops and lectures on creativity and visual communication.

Stewart, who is a co-founder of Integrative Teaching ThinkTank, a national organization devoted to improving college-level art and design teaching, will also lead a team of Integrative Teaching ThinkTank members in teaching courses at CREATE!

Only 30 students will be accepted to attend CREATE! For details including course descriptions, the application process, tuition and deadlines, see http://torrancecreate.110mb.com.
