UGA advertising research ranked number one once again

Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia has once again been ranked number one in advertising research, this time on the international stage.

The latest honor comes courtesy of the International Journal of Advertising. In its fall 2009 issue, the international journal ranked UGA tops based on the number of articles published in the top advertising journals including Journal of Advertising, Journal of Advertising Research, Journal of Current Issues and Research in Advertising, International Journal of Advertising and Journal of Marketing Communication.

In 2008, the Journal of Advertising ranked UGA number one in advertising research based on the number of articles published in the top three U.S.-based advertising journals from 1997-2006.

“This number one ranking is especially gratifying because it recognizes the scholarship of our faculty and their contributions to the leading advertising journals,” said Karen W. King, professor of advertising and head of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication department of advertising and public relations.

The study examined data on authors’ academic affiliation based on institutions where scholars were employed over a ten-year period (1998-2007).

Rounding out the top five publishing institutions were Old Dominion University, University of Texas at Austin, Michigan State University and Northwestern University.

“The distinction is an indication that we are running on all cylinders: producing the level of peer-reviewed scholarship expected at a Research I university,” said Tom Reichert, Grady College professor of advertising. “We’re producing more tangible knowledge about advertising than any other program in the world; that includes Asia, Australia, Europe and the top universities in the United States. It’s gratifying to know that my colleagues’ hard work is being recognized.”

Established in 1915, the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication offers seven undergraduate majors: advertising, broadcast news, magazines, newspapers, public relations, publication management and telecommunication arts. The college offers two graduate degrees, and is home to WNEG-TV, the Knight Chair in Health and Medical Journalism and the Peabody Awards, internationally recognized as one of the most prestigious prizes for excellence in electronic media.
