The University of Georgia Alpha Upsilon Circle of the Omicron Delta Kappa Society has been named a Circle of Distinction. ODK is a national leadership honor society that recognizes and encourages superior scholarship, leadership and exemplary character among college and university students, faculty, staff, administrators and alumni.

"This award marks the hard work of a group of incredibly talented and committed leaders," said T.W. Cauthen, assistant dean of students for student life and faculty secretary for the circle.

Following a period of inactivity, the Alpha Upsilon Circle was revived in recent years. The circle was founded in 1935 by 12 students and four faculty members and included then UGA president S.V. Sanford and dean of men William Tate among its early members. In his ODK files, Tate described the society as "the most respected organization of this nature on the campus."

"I am continually humbled by the power that exists within a community of leaders who decide to do something great. The rebirth of ODK at UGA is one such example," Cauthen said.

The Omicron Delta Kappa Society recognizes achievement in scholarship, athletics, campus/community service, social/religious activities, campus government, journalism, speech, the mass media and creative and performing arts.

The Alpha Upsilon Circle of ODK is a registered student organization with UGA's division of student affairs.
