UGA announces Freedom Breakfast and nominations open for President’s Fulfilling the Dream Award

Athens, Ga. – In conjunction with the Martin Luther King Jr. national holiday, the eighth annual Freedom Breakfast will be held Jan. 14 at 7:30 a.m. at the University of Georgia in the Grand Hall of the Tate Student Center. During the breakfast, the President’s Fulfilling the Dream Awards will be presented.

Sponsored by UGA, the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government and the Clarke County School District, the Freedom Breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m. in the Grand Hall of UGA’s Tate Student Center. This year’s theme is “The Power of the Dream: Celebrating Courage.” The keynote speaker will be Mary Frances Early, who in 1962 became the first African-American to earn a degree from UGA.

Tickets are $18 for individuals or $144 for a table of eight. The deadline for returning ticket request forms is Dec. 3. After this date, all tickets must be purchased at the Office of Institutional Diversity in the Holmes-Hunter Academic Building. For more information, call 706/583-8195 or 706/425-3099.

At the breakfast, UGA President Michael F. Adams will present the President’s Fulfilling the Dream Awards to individuals who have made significant efforts to build bridges and understanding. The university will accept nominations for the awards through Dec. 3. Winners will be individuals from the university, Athens-Clarke County and surrounding areas who strive to make a reality of King’s dream of equality and justice.

The awards selection committee will consider each nominee’s work in the areas of infusing King’s teachings into the course of daily living and instruction; utilizing his philosophy to reduce tensions, resolve conflict and foster goodwill; promote the spirit of King’s example of volunteerism and citizenship to address critical issues and problems; and significant efforts to use his teachings of social justice and equity to build bridges of unity and understanding.
