UGA Ballet Ensemble presents spring 2010 concert

Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia Ballet Ensemble will present its spring 2010 concert April 8-10 at 8 p.m. and April 11 at 2 p.m. in the New Dance Theatre at the Dance Building on the UGA Campus.

The concert will host seven choreographers and premier five new ballets. Department of dance alumna Leslie Reeves Hardcastle’s Strange Lands opens the concert with a contemporary ballet that journeys through the melodies and rhythms of Celtic music. UGA visiting lecturer Denise Posnak debuts her new work Thrust, which propels four women draped in blue through a frenetic, rhythmic environment. Lecturer of Dance at Spelman College Daryl Foster debuts his work Fractured

Guest choreographers Caitlin Christopher and Derrek Walters dance to their choreography of Mal Amoueux, which combines the art of classical pas de deux work and ballroom dance showcasing the raw ferocity of the tango and the elegant line of ballet. Founding Artistic Director of the UGA Ballet Ensemble, Joan Buttram offers a new ballet entitled Vivaldi in G set to the allegro section of the composer’s “Concerto in G Major for Two Mandolins, Strings and Harpsichord.”

“This season’s concert offers a great deal of variety,” said Buttram. “There will be something for everyone to enjoy.”

The evening of dance also hosts several historic reconstructions including Professor Emeritus Virginia Carver’s Pages from an Edwardian Notebook (1984), featuring pianist Zachery Beard.

Dance alumna Marianne Crawford Hale offers the restaging of her Garland Waltz and Allegro from the Concerto Grosso in G Minor. A reconstruction of excerpts from Act III of Coppélia, originally created by Arthur Saint-Léon (1870) to the music of Léo Delibes, will be performed by the UGA Ballet Ensemble.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students/seniors and are available at the Tate Student Center, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For ticket information, call 706/542-8579.
