UGA celebrates Everybody Get Up month

Athens, Ga. – Celebrate Feb., the month of love, with yoga, movies and jazz dance. The student group FLY (For Loving Yourself), is offering these and other free events throughout the month to promote healthy body image at UGA. The kick-off event for Everybody Get Up month will be Tuesday, Feb. 5 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Tate Plaza where anyone can stop by and decorate blue jeans, write on the “Embrace Your Body” wall, enjoy hot cocoa, get a “tattoo” and learn about all the events.

“We wanted to give students an opportunity to feel good about their bodies, critically examine cultural attitudes about beauty and have fun doing it,” said Funmi Adebayo, president of FLY.

FLY works to create awareness about dieting, body satisfaction, media influences and eating disorders on the UGA campus. UGA’s celebration coincides with Eating Disorders Awareness Week sponsored by the National Eating Disorders Association. This year, the group has added a few events especially for men, including a film Do I Look Fat? and a workshop on healthy workouts for guys in Russell Academic Center.

A week long art exhibit in the Tate Gallery will include pieces from a California artist’s collection, Alterations, which explores issues around body image and clothes, a look at men and the media in Mirror, Mirror – Changing Images of Men and a photography project by members of a local body image therapy group. The exhibit will open in Tate Gallery on Monday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. with a poetry reading and has been approved as a blue card event.
