Robert N. "Bob" Saveland, professor emeritus of the University of Georgia College of Education, was recognized for his contributions to the field with the George J. Miller Award for Distinguished Service to Geographic Education, the top award presented by the National Council for Geographic Education.

Saveland served as a professor of social science education at UGA from 1968-1985. The award is named for the NCGE's founder and longest serving editor of NCGE's flagship publication The Journal of Geography.

Saveland, 91, received his Ed.D. from Columbia University's Teachers College. He and his wife, Clementi Holder, remain active in the Athens community. He is an avid sailor and donated boats to Sandy Creek Park to establish a community sailing program. He is also a supporter of the UGA Performing Arts Center.
