Athens, Ga. - Six undocumented immigrant students from Cedar Shoals and Clarke Central high schools will discuss how recent Georgia immigration laws and policies are affecting them. The forum, hosted by the University of Georgia College of Education, will be held Oct. 26 from 5:30-7 p.m. in room 481 of the Tate Student Center.

The first of three Immigration and Education Forums will feature a panel discussion between the students and two of their teachers and a question and answer session with the audience led by JoBeth Allen and Ruth Harman, faculty members in the College of Education's department of language and literacy education.

The public is invite to attend and share their perspectives on the issue.

The Immigration and Education Forums are being held to encourage dialogue and educate the UGA and Athens communities about the effect of Georgia's new immigration laws and policies on students, teachers, schools and local communities. Future forums will feature local teachers, who will discuss how Georgia immigration laws and policies have affected the classroom, and UGA faculty, who will talk on the implications for colleges of education.

The UGA College of Education Dean's Office, the Faculty Senate and the Dean's Council on Diversity are sponsoring the forums. For more information, see http://www.coe.uga.edu/news/2011/10/11/immigration-education-forum/.
