Athens, Ga. – University of Georgia counseling professor Edward Delgado-Romero has been voted president-elect of the National Latino Psychological Association (NLPA).
Delgado-Romero, an associate professor in the College of Education’s department of counseling and human development resources, is a Lifetime Founding Member of the NLPA and served as treasurer and membership chair of the organization from 2002-05.
Delgado-Romero will take office as NLPA president in 2009 and serve a two-year term. However, the position requires a six-year commitment with a preliminary two-year term as president-elect and an additional two years of service as past president. Delgado-Romero said he hopes to encourage students and young professionals to join and remain active in the organization, and he plans to bring the NLPA national conference to Athens or Atlanta in 2010 to highlight the growing Latino population in Georgia.
The American Psychological Association recently named Delgado-Romero a Fellow of the Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues. He was honored in 2006 with the NLPA’s Distinguished Professional Early Career Award, presented to outstanding scholars within their first 10 years of post-doctorate work.
Delgado-Romero was also named Faculty Member of the Year by the Counseling Psychology Student Association at UGA. He serves on the university’s Latino Advisory Council.
Delgado-Romero came to UGA in 2005 from Indiana University, where he was an adjunct professor of Latino studies and assistant professor of counseling psychology from 2002-05. He earned his Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Notre Dame in 1997 and is a licensed psychologist in the state of Georgia.
