UGA counseling professor receives community change award

Athens, Ga. – University of Georgia counseling professor Anneliese Singh has received the Ramesh and Vijaya Bakshi Community Change Award for her outstanding leadership and social activism in metro Atlanta’s South Asian community.

The award specifically recognizes her clinical and research work on ending child sexual abuse in the South Asian community.

Singh, an assistant professor in the College of Education’s department of counseling and human development services, researches multicultural counseling and social justice, qualitative methodology with historically marginalized groups, advocacy to end child sexual abuse in South Asian communities, feminist theory and practice, Asian-American counseling and psychology issues, and empowerment interventions with trauma survivors.

Singh, who received her Ph.D. at Georgia State University, joined the UGA faculty this fall.

The award was presented by Raksha, a Georgia-based nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting a stronger and healthier South Asian community through confidential support services, education and advocacy.
