UGA debate team wins at CSU Fullerton competition

Athens, Ga. — The University of Georgia debate team of Brent Culpepper and Kevin Rabinowitz won the debate tournament held at California State University in Fullerton California from January 2-4. The tournament attracted 80 teams from 19 states and the District of Columbia. There were more than 35 universities represented in the competition.

In the preliminary phase of the tournament, Culpepper and Rabinowitz compiled a record of five wins and one loss. Following the preliminary debates, the field was reduced from 80 to 32 teams for the single elimination phase of the competition. The UGA debaters defeated teams from Berkeley, Dartmouth, George Washington, Harvard and Northwestern on the way to a first place finish.

Both students have received Russell Advocacy Scholarships that are supported by the Richard B. Russell Foundation. The team is supported by the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences and the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs.
