Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia dedicated its new University Childcare Center on Jan. 25. The facility is one of the first buildings on the UGA Health Sciences Campus to become operational.

“A university childcare center has been the goal of many people on campus for quite a few years,” said UGA President Michael F. Adams. “I am very pleased that the facility is now operational… and that we are providing this service both to UGA faculty and staff and to the community at large.”

Students at the center who joined Adams in cutting the ceremonial ribbon included Timothy Asiinwe, Isabella Salguero, Alper Babayigit, Augustine Rahaim, Natalie Phillips, Michael Hu, Victor Piercy, Kaitlin Nunn and Zoe DeBarry.

The UCC, which opened in early January, can serve up to 146 children ages 6 weeks through 4 years. It is open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Some part-time slots also are available. Up to 20 percent of the children may qualify for a discounted rate based on family income.

The center is licensed by the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning and meets the National Association for the Education of Young Children standards in the areas of curriculum and staffing including student-to-teacher ratios, group size and continuing education for teachers.
