Athens, Ga. - The University of Georgia Deer Lab and the Quality Deer Management Association, a national nonprofit wildlife conservation organization, will hold the Georgia Wildlife Research Symposium and 2012 QDMA Banquet on Oct. 11 starting at 1 p.m. at the UGA Center for Continuing Education Hotel and Conference Center.

The public is invited to attend the seminars and banquet, which will include games, raffles and auctions. A portion of the money raised will benefit the UGA Deer Lab's research efforts.

Based in the UGA Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, the deer lab's researchers study various vital issues affecting the whitetail deer, including physiology, behavior and management. Warnell School professors and a team of graduate students currently are conducting research on the whitetail deer's visual and hearing capabilities, visual and scent communication, habitat management, coyote predation and deer-vehicle collision reduction.

The QDMA is a nonprofit wildlife conservation organization dedicated to ensuring the future of white-tailed deer, wildlife habitat and hunting heritage.

"We are excited about hosting this event again this year in partnership with the QDMA," said Karl V. Miller, a Warnell School professor. "Last year's event was an outstanding success and provided some much needed support for our research program."

The symposium begins at 1 p.m. with registration, followed by a welcome by Miller and Brian Murphy, CEO of QDMA. Warnell School professors and graduate students will lead seminars in the afternoon, and the banquet's social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Symposium and seminar details are available at www.qdma.com/events/athens-ga.-qdma-banquet-uga-whitetail-research-seminars. Tickets are $65 per person or $120 for a couple and include a one-year QDMA membership. Corporate sponsorships are available.

The banquet and symposium will include representatives from Foxworthy Outdoors, an organization founded by comedian Jeff Foxworthy to promote good stewardship of the outdoors and improve the quality of time spent outside. Foxworthy is a key supporter of research into the improvement and proper management of whitetail deer.
