UGA grad student in student affairs administration named SREB Fellow

Athens, Ga. – Jawaan Wallace, a University of Georgia graduate student in college student affairs administration, has been selected as a Southern Regional Education Board Fellow for 2008-2009.

Wallace, a first-year doctoral student in the College of Education’s department of counseling and human development services, was one of 71 outstanding minority students selected for the fellowship.

Wallace will receive an annual stipend of $15,000 for up to five years. She is also required to attend the SREB annual conference which promotes professional development and networking.

“What I am grateful for and appreciate most about the fellowship is the opportunity to collaborate and network with other underrepresented Ph.D. students,” Wallace said. “The mentorship and support system this program provides is invaluable.”

Before coming to UGA, Wallace worked as the assistant director of undergraduate admissions at Johns Hopkins University, the director of college counseling at The Galloway School and an academic advisor and director of recruitment for the city and regional planning program at Georgia Tech.

She earned her master’s degree in higher education administration from the University of Akron and a bachelor’s degree in history from Hampton University.

The SREB Fellowship is awarded to minority students participating in a doctoral program with the intention of becoming a full-time faculty member at a postsecondary institution following graduation. The selection process is based on academic transcripts, letters of recommendation and a statement of purpose.
