UGA Health Center recognizes Sexual Responsibility Week

Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia Health Center is presenting a series of activities to promote Sexual Responsibility Week, Feb. 8 -12.

On Wednesday, Feb. 11 and Thursday, Feb.12, the health center staff and volunteers will be on the Tate Plaza from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. recognizing National Condom Day and promoting safer sex choices. Students will have an opportunity to participate in a number of activities focused on healthy sexuality and safer sex. Information about abstinence, sexual decision making, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and contraception will be provided. Free condoms and lubricant will be available.

Katy Janousek, sexual health coordinator, will be presenting a number of programs in residence halls on campus throughout the week on sexually transmitted infections, women’s sexual health, and general sex education. A complete list of programs is posted on the University Health Center website at www.uhs.uga.edu .

Janousek will discuss hormonal contraceptives on RadioRx, a talk show on WUOG -90.5 FM, on Feb. 11 from 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 pm.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, abstaining from oral, anal and vaginal sex is the most effective way to prevent STI transmission, but the correct and consistent use of latex condoms can greatly reduce a person’s risk.

The National College Health Assessment sponsored by the American College Health Association shows that only 62.7% of UGA students used a condom the last time they engaged in vaginal sex and only 1.3% the last time they engaged in oral sex. For more information, please see www.uhs.uga.edu.
