Athens, Ga. – Yunjiang (John) Jiang, a senior mathematics major at the University of Georgia, has been awarded a prestigious Graduate Fellowship by the National Science Foundation. Only 28 applicants in the nation were offered such a fellowship in mathematics in 2007, according to the math department at UGA.
Jiang is currently studying at Utrecht in the Netherlands on a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, one of the most distinguished scholarships in the country for undergraduates in mathematics, science and engineering. He plans to graduate from UGA this summer and move next fall to Stanford University for graduate studies.
Jiang is now taking a 10-month “master class” in geometry and physics in the Netherlands. In his freshman year, he participated in two consecutive National Science Foundation-funded Research Experience for Undergraduate programs, one at UGA and one at Central Michigan University.
The NSF Graduate Fellowship is for $30,000 for three years, though it can be spread out over five years. A native of China, Jiang is now a permanent resident in the U.S.
