UGA observatory closed, public viewings canceled

Athens, Ga. – An unanticipated problem has caused the closing of the UGA observatory, and public viewings have been canceled until further notice.

The motors that power the dome have failed, according to UGA astronomy professor Scott Shaw.

“Observatory open houses will be canceled until funds can be found to make repairs,” Shaw said.

The observatory was closed earlier this fall due to an equipment problem. However, a donor stepped forward to pay for repairs and the observatory opened with a new schedule of events.

Shaw said, “Current status of the open houses and a way tohelp repair the dome can be found at http://www.physast.uga.edu/~star/.”
