The University of Georgia Performing Arts Center will present the Aspen String Trio on March 27-28 at 8 p.m. in Hodgson Concert Hall. For their second concert, the trio will be joined by Hugh Hodgson School of Music faculty members Michael Heald, Maggie Snyder and David Starkweather.
The Aspen String Trio consists of violinist David Perry, violist Victoria Chiang and cellist Michael Mermagen. The three musicians share a 20-year friendship and long-time association as artist-faculty with the Aspen Music Festival.
Perry has an international career as a chamber musician, soloist and teacher. He has performed in Carnegie Hall as well as most of the major cultural centers of North and South America, Europe and the Far East. He is also first violinist of the Pro Arte Quartet and was concertmaster of the Aspen Chamber Symphony for many years.
Chiang has performed as soloist, recitalist and chamber musician across North America, Europe and Asia. She has served on the faculty of the Juilliard School and the Hartt School of Music, and she is a former member of the board of the American Viola Society.
Mermagen is associate professor of cello and chamber music at the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music at the Catholic University of America. He toured extensively with American Chamber Players and Arista Piano Trio, and he was featured as the cello soloist for the New York premiere of two works by choreographer Mark Morris.
The Aspen String Trio's March 27 concert will include works by Franz Schubert, Bohuslav Martinu, Richard Strauss, Ernő Dohnányi and Gideon Klein. The concert on March 28 will feature music by Mozart, Strauss and Brahms.
These performances are part of the Franklin College Chamber Music Series.Both concerts are free but tickets are required. Tickets can be ordered online at pac.uga.edu or by calling the box office at 706/542-4400 or toll free at 888/289-8497.
The Aspen String Trio performances are underwritten by Susan and Claiborne Glover and by Calvin D. and Clare E. Hasbrouck.
The Aspen String Trio will also be in residency to work with UGA School of Music students. The residency is made possible by a grant from the Jane and Harry Willson Center for Humanities and Arts.
