Athens, Ga. – John Lynch, director of Bands, and George Foreman, director of the Performing Arts Center, have embarked on a collaborative project to present their first outdoor concert with the University of Georgia Wind Ensemble on Friday, Oct. 8 at 12:30 p.m.
Designed to evoke the feel of an old-fashioned band concert in the park, the event will take place on the North Campus quad near the Arch, and is free and open to the public.
“This will be a very festive event featuring pops music, light classics, and beloved marches and patriotic numbers. We wanted to create the opportunity for the UGA and Athens community to come together to enjoy some good fellowship and fun music,” explains Lynch. He says patrons are encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs, and picnic lunches.
The first half of the program will be conducted by Lynch and will use standard modern band instrumentation. The Wind Ensemble will perform light classics including Bacchanalia from Khatchaturian’s Spartacus, selections from the Broadway hit Wicked, and Goldman’s On theMall march, where the audience will be invited to sing along.
Foreman will serve as guest conductor on the second half of the program, which will
showcase historic band music with original instrumentation on such classics as Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever and Washington Post march. Foreman, a leading expert on nineteenth-centuryhistoric band repertoire, calls this the “Golden Age of band music.”
