Athens, Ga. – Two University of Georgia professors-Charles Hudson, retired professor of anthropology, and John Inscoe, professor of Southern history- explore the rich history of the Appalachian Mountains on PBS this month in Appalachia: A History of Mountains and People. Both scholars served as advisers to the series in addition to being in front of the camera. The series, ten years in the making, is the first environmental series of any region on film.
The four-part series, which will air on Thursdays, April 29-May 20, from 10-11 p.m. on PBS, travels through time and terrain to uncover the depth of the Appalachian story. Academy Award-winning actress Sissy Spacek serves as narrator of the series which includes stories and interviews with experts like author Barbara Kingsolver, Pulitzer Prize-winning scientist E.O. Wilson and other scientists, historians and artists.
The series is underwritten by the National Science Foundation, the Arthur Vining Davis Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Cherokee Preservation Foundation, Appalachian Regional Commission, Public Television Viewers and PBS.
