UGA researcher named Fellow of the American Meteorological Society

Athens, Ga. – Marshall Shepherd, an associate professor in the department of geography at the University of Georgia, has been elected a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society. Only two-tenths of one percent of society members are chosen for this honor through the Fellow nomination process.

“I’m truly honored and delighted to be recognized by my peers at this stage of my career,” said Shepherd. His department is part of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences.

Shepherd specializes in urban weather-climate, mesoscale weather processes, precipitation, tropical weather hazards and satellite remote sensing.

According to the notification letter that Shepherd received, the honor serves as recognition of outstanding contributions to the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences or their application through a number of years.

Formal announcement of Shepherd’s honor will be made at the 89th Annual Review and Fellows Awards on Jan. 11 in Phoenix, Ariz. This event typically is a part of the ceremonies that kick off the society’s annual meeting.

Shepherd is well-known thanks to frequent appearances discussing climate and weather on such television programs as The Today Show and Larry King Live, but he is a respected researcher and teacher as well. He came to UGA as a faculty member in 2006.
