UGA residence halls compete to conserve energy, water

Athens, Ga. – University of Georgia students living in the Hill Community (Boggs, Church, Mell, Lipscomb and Hill halls) will compete in the inaugural UGA Green Cup competition, Sept. 14-Oct. 11 to see which residence hall can reduce energy and water use the most.

Halls will be scored based on kilowatts and gallons used. Bonus points will be awarded for attendance at competition events including the kick-off party on Sept.13 from
5-7 p.m. on the lawns between Mell and Lipscomb and between Boggs, Church and Hill. The party will include free pizza, an incandescent to compact florescent light bulb exchange and a short presentation on energy conservation.

Energy and water numbers will be displayed each day in the lobby of each hall and on the Web site to provide feedback. This hands-on learning opportunity will allow students to see first hand the impact of their individual actions

In conjunction with the competition, an environmental film screening will be held Sept. 22 at 8:30 p.m. between Mell and Lipscomb halls.

More information on the competition is available online at http://gogreen.uga.edu/greencup/.

This competition is sponsored by the UGA River Basin Center of the Odum School of Ecology, University Housing, the UGA Physical Plant, and the Ecofocus Film Festival.
