Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia will break ground for the University Health Center expansion and renovation project on Wednesday, April 23 at 1 p.m. A reception on the health center patio will follow the groundbreaking ceremony. The public is invited to attend.
The first phase of the $17 million project will relocate the parking lot and increase patient and handicapped spaces. The 30,000-square-foot expansion phase will include a new service, a vision clinic to assist students with their eye care on the first floor. Communications, health promotion and the John Fontaine Jr. Center for Alcohol Awareness and Education also will be located on the first floor. The second floor expansion will house counseling and psychiatric services providing additional clinician offices, group therapy rooms and testing space.
Renovations to the existing building will include allergy/travel clinic relocation to the first floor-improving patient accessibility, urgent care procedure room, treatment space, expanded waiting space and additional pharmacy space to display retail products. The women’s clinic will expand to meet the demand for services. Information technology will gain additional space to support the electronic health record, electronic pharmacy system, electronic clinical lab system and future digital radiography system. The dental clinic will add two new operatories. Completion is expected in 2009.
UGA President Michael F. Adams will preside at the groundbreaking event. Rodney Bennett, vice president for student affairs; Jean Chin, health center executive director; and Richard Lo, third year pharmacy student and Student Health Advisory Council member, will speak.
The University Health Center is a department within UGA’s Division of Student Affairs.
