UGA to host visiting ceramics artist Arthur Gonzalez

Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia Lamar Dodd School of Art brings to campus the ceramic sculptor Arthur Gonzalez as a visiting artist, beginning with a lecture at 5 p.m. in room S101 of the art school on Jan. 28. In addition to the lecture and several workshops over the course of three days, Gonzalez’s visit will include an opening for his solo exhibition, @Last: Ceramic Sculpture, at the art school on Jan. 29. The opening from 7-9 p.m. in Gallery 307 of the art school is open to the public.

A professor at the California College of the Arts and a recipient of numerous awards, honors, residencies and public commissions, Gonzalez is highly renowned as a figurative ceramics sculptor and teacher. Accomplished in drawing and painting, Gonzalez utilizes glass, metal and variety of found objects in his ceramic sculptures to create wall pieces and life-sized figures.

“Arthur is a natural-born teacher who works tirelessly with students-even during demonstrations, he is teaching,” said Ted Saupe, associate professor and area chair of ceramics in the art school as well as a longtime associate of Gonzalez going back to his one-year residency at UGA in 1981-82. “His sculpture is mythical and provocative, imbued with passion and intrigue in a way that is all about the clay and the process of working with clay and fire.”

Gonzalez’s visit to UGA is sponsored by the Ceramics Student Organization and the art school. For more information, see http://www.art.uga.edu.
