Athens, Ga. – The Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia will bring to campus the ceramic artist Kevin Snipes as a Franklin College Visiting Scholar beginning Feb. 22. Snipes will conduct workshops on Tuesday, Feb. 23, and Wednesday, Feb. 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the main ceramics studio on Jackson Street. The artist will give a slide lecture at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25, in Room 150 in the main art building on River Road. The workshops and the lecture are free and open to the public.
Snipes is currently an artist-in-residence at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts, a public, nonprofit educational institution founded in 1951 by brick maker Archie Bray outside of Helena, Mont. He holds a BFA in ceramics and drawing from the Cleveland Institute of Art and an MFA from the University of Florida. Snipes’ work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including in Jingdezhen, China.
The ten-day residency at UGA was made possible by a grant from the Franklin College Office of Inclusion and Diversity Leadership and a matching grant from the art school. The length of the residency will allow for the making, firing and finishing of an entire body of work by Snipes.
“The art department, and especially the ceramics area, is extremely fortunate to have Kevin Snipes as our premier visiting artist this semester,” said Ted Saupe, associate professor and area chair of ceramics in the art school. “I have always admired Kevin’s work for its irreverent and good natured edginess. His work reflects a kind of street smart, wise-guy attitude and we are all looking forward to his visit.”
