Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia Department of Housing will welcome all new and returning students to Athens beginning Tuesday, August 12, through Thursday, August 14. Hunker Down with Housing is a volunteer program designed to streamline the move-in process and assist with traffic congestion, parking lot availability and elevator service. Hundreds of UGA students, faculty and staff will volunteer to help more than 5,000 new and returning students move into their residence halls.
“I remember how friendly the staff was on my move-in day. They helped me become more excited about living in the dorms and they helped calm my mother’s nerves,” said Angelina Marmorato, a senior majoring in psychology from Marietta. “Just the move-in day experience itself has stuck with me through my college years. I now value friends I met that very day. It is very important for students to feel a warm welcome and to get a great start here at the university.”
On Tuesday, August 12, traffic is expected to be very heavy on Baxter, Lumpkin, Finley, Hull and Church Streets between the hours of 6 a.m. and 1 p.m. Members of the Athens community are advised to avoid these areas. Traffic in the university area will be congested throughout the weekend.
