Athens, Ga. - The University of Georgia has an expert available to comment on Nelson Mandela, who died today after a long illness.

William Finlay, director, UGA-Globis Study-Abroad Program in Stellenbosch, South Africa, was in South Africa this summer when Mandela was in failing health.

Mandela was awarded the Delta Prize for Global Understanding from the University of Georgia and Delta Airlines in 2007. Mandela was honored for his leadership in ending apartheid, facilitating a peaceful transition to democracy, and making possible interracial understanding in South Africa. Not only has his work helped bring peace to South Africa, but it has also served as a model for bringing peace to other parts of the world, according to the award.
