University of Georgia professor of classics wins two major awards

Athens, Ga. – Richard LaFleur, a professor of classics at the University of Georgia, has been named recipient of professional accolades from two organizations.

He was honored as Post-Secondary Foreign Language Teacher of the Year by the Southern Conference on Language Teaching at its annual conference in Atlanta in March, and he also has been notified by the American Classical League that he will receive that group’s coveted Meritus Award “for sustained and distinguished service to the classics profession” at its annual Institute in Nashville in June.

LaFleur, who is Franklin Professor of classics and coordinator of the Elementary Latin Program at UGA, was also honored last year by the Foreign Language Association of Georgia as Foreign Language Professor of the Year.

Organized in 1965, the Southern Conference on Language Teaching is one of five regional affiliates of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. The 14 affiliates in the SCOLT region include Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The mission of the Southern Conference on Language Teaching is the advancement of the study of modern and classical languages and their literatures and cultures at all levels of instruction.

The American Classical League, founded in 1919, is a national organization devoted to promoting the languages and cultures of ancient Greece and Rome.
