UGA’s University Theatre presents Aunt Dan and Lemon

Athens, Ga. – The University Theatre at the University of Georgia will present Wallace Shawn’s play Aunt Dan and Lemon March 29 through April 3 at 8 p.m., with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on April 3. Performances will be held in the Cellar Theatre of UGA’s Fine Arts Building.

Playwright Wallace Shawn is the actor known as the voice of Rex, the dinosaur, in the Toy Story films and as the “inconceivable” kidnapper Vizzini in The Princess Bride. According to director Farley Richmond, “Aunt Dan and Lemon presents an entirely different side of Shawn, who, as a playwright, writes about subject matter that ventures into controversial territory that resonates as much today as it first did when the play was published in 1985.”

Delving into issues as far-ranging as the Nazis’ treatment of the Jews and Nixon-era Secretary of State Henry Kissinger’s approach to Vietnam, the playis an exploration of ethics, politics, sex and greed that illustrates, as Shawn writes, “the difference between a perfectly decent person and a monster is just a few thoughts.”

University Theatre’s Studio Series presents four productions each season in an intimate and stripped-down format. Aunt Dan and Lemon is the final offering of the series this season.
