Athens, Ga. – The Georgia Associated Press Broadcasters Association recently honored WUGA, 91.7/97.9 FM public radio for the Athens area, with six awards for outstanding radio reporting.
WUGA news director Mary Kay Mitchell won five first place awards and one honorable mention. Top honors for the best series reporting category went to Mitchell for her year-long series of stories, features and interviews reporting on the progress of anti-poverty efforts by the Partners for a Prosperous Athens (PPA). In addition, an individual piece on the volunteer fair sponsored by the PPA won two other first place awards, one for best use of sound and another for best specialized reporting.
A profile of the four Republican candidates vying for the nomination to run for the seat of agriculture commissioner won first place for best feature reporting. The best general reporting honor was awarded to a story which detailed the University of Georgia Redcoat Band’s final rehearsal before its ground-breaking concert tour of China.
Mitchell’s coverage of a large May Day march in Athens which supported immigrant rights received an honorable mention for best use of sound.
The AP awards were presented April 28th at the annual banquet in Atlanta. WUGA competes against all radio stations in Georgia outside of the Atlanta market.
