Georgia Museum of Art to offer comics-focused Teen Studio

In conjunction with the closing of the exhibition "Beyond the Bulldog: Jack Davis," the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia will hold a Teen Studio night focusing on comics on Jan. 3 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Georgia Museum of Art to exhibit ‘Water Music’

The Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia will present the focused exhibition "Water Music" in its Alonzo and Vallye Dudley Gallery, dedicated to time-based media, from Feb. 2 to March 10. Drawing from private collections and from the permanent collection of the Georgia Museum of Art, "Water Music" will bring together diverse visual perspectives on the theme of water and the idea of water music.

Georgia Museum of Art to display works of traditional African art

The Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia will present the exhibition "From Savanna to Savannah: African Art from the Collection of Don Kole" from Jan. 19 to April 14. Featuring more than 40 works of three-dimensional traditional art from the early to mid-20th century, the exhibition includes sacred, meaningful objects created by numerous peoples in sub-Saharan Africa. Works of art in various media-wood, bronze, terracotta, sandstone and cloth-from regions as diverse as Cameroon, Guinea, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo present examples from the visual and material culture of Africa that demonstrate cultural concepts and religious beliefs.

Georgia Museum of Art at UGA collects awards from Southeastern Museums Conference

The Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia won four awards at the Southeastern Museums Conference annual meeting, held Nov. 7-9 in Williamsburg, Va. The museum received two gold awards for publications (one for its newly redesigned visitor guide and one for Facet, its quarterly newsletter, which also won first place in the American Association of Museums Publications Design Competition), the Best in Show award, also for Facet, and a certificate of excellence for the exhibition "Georgia Bellflowers: The Furniture of Henry Eugene Thomas."

Georgia Museum of Art ranked in the top 5 percent of museums in the country

The Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia was recently reaccredited by the American Alliance of Museums (formerly known as the American Association of Museums), an honor that less than 5 percent of U.S. museums receive. To celebrate this achievement, GMOA will be open to the public Oct. 22 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., with an official announcement at 2 p.m. by Ford Bell, president of AAM and an ice cream social to follow. The event is free and open to the public.

Georgia Museum of Art to celebrate illustrator Jack Davis with fall exhibition

The Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia will present the exhibition "Beyond the Bulldog: Jack Davis" from Nov. 3-Jan. 6. Organized by guest curator Patrick Dean, a cartoonist who sits on the board of the Jack Davis Foundation, the exhibition goes deeper into Davis' career than the sports and caricature work for which he is best known, focusing on his black-and-white drawings in particular.

Six of Athens' established venues for visual art have collaborated to introduce Third Thursday, an evening when art can be viewed on the third Thursday of the month during evening hours at all locales, with the first event scheduled for Sept. 20.

Georgia Museum of Art to exhibit prints and drawings by Gerald L. Brockhurst

As part of its commitment to the continued research of Gerald Leslie Brockhurst's work, the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia is organizing an exhibition of 41 prints and drawings by the artist exclusively from the collection of Daniel and Rosalyn Jacobs. The exhibition will be on view from June 30-Sept. 16.

‘Responses in Time: Video Submissions to the Kress Project’ on view at GMOA

The Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia is hosting the brief exhibition "Responses in Time: Video Submissions to the Kress Project" from now until March 18 in the Alonzo and Vallye Dudley Gallery, which is devoted to new media. This exhibition features videos submitted to the Kress Project, a competition and online exhibition of creative responses inspired by the GMOA's Kress Study Collection of Italian Renaissance and Baroque paintings. The Kress Project is organized by GMOA and made possible by a grant from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation.

Deanne Deavours, noted dealer of American furniture and decorative art, has received the Henry D. Green Lifetime Achievement Award for the Decorative Arts, presented by the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia.
