UGA McBee Lecture to focus on academic procession

John Thelin, a research professor in the history of higher education and public policy at the University of Kentucky, will be the keynote speaker for the University of Georgia 24th Annual Louise McBee Lecture Nov. 1 at 11 a.m. in Mahler Auditorium of the UGA Hotel and Conference Center at the Georgia Center. The venue is a change from the Chapel, where the lecture was held for the previous 23 years.

Arthur Blank to speak at UGA fall undergraduate Commencement

Philanthropist Arthur M. Blank, co-founder of The Home Depot and owner of the Atlanta Falcons football franchise, will be the speaker for the University of Georgia fall 2012 undergraduate Commencement exercise Dec. 14 at 9:30 a.m. in Stegeman Coliseum. In addition, he will be awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree from UGA during the ceremony. Fran Teague, long-time UGA faculty member who holds a joint appointment in the department of English and the department of theatre and film studies, will speak at the graduate Commencement exercise at 2:30 p.m. in the same location.

UGA to commemorate 50th anniversary of its first African-American graduate

The University of Georgia will celebrate a milestone in desegregation when it commemorates the 50th anniversary of the graduation of Mary Frances Early, the first African American to earn a degree from UGA, in a ceremony Aug. 15 at 3 p.m. in the university's Fine Arts Building. Highlights will include remarks from Early and several UGA dignitaries, musical performances from UGA students and a keynote address from civil rights pioneer Lonnie C. King Jr.
