New UGA Drug Discovery Core lab works to develop treatment of leading diseases

The University of Georgia has created the Drug Discovery Core laboratory, a campus-wide collaborative facility designed to hasten the development of therapeutic drugs for a number of major diseases.

Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation commits $1.5 million to support need-based aid at UGA

The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation has committed $1.5 million to the University of Georgia to provide need-based aid for students in two program areas. The UGA College of Pharmacy will receive $1 million to support pharmacy students facing financial hardships. A separate $500,000 gift will be matched by the Georgia Commitment Scholarship Program and will establish five need-based scholarships benefiting UGA students from Atlanta's historic Westside neighborhoods.

NASA engineer, UGA alumnus to speak at College of Engineering

Russ Fortson, an engineer with NASA contractor Science Applications International Corporation, will be the inaugural speaker for the University of Georgia College of Engineering's Homecoming Symposium Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. in the Driftmier Engineering Center auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

Israeli engineering dean to speak on international water solutions at UGA

Noah I. Galil, dean of the faculty of civil and environmental engineering at the Technion Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel, will address "Advanced Israeli Water Solutions: Israel as a Pilot, Solving Water Problems for the World" on Aug. 26 at 10:30 a.m. in the University of Georgia College of Engineering's Driftmier Auditorium. The public is invited to attend.

UGA McBee Lecture to focus on academic procession

John Thelin, a research professor in the history of higher education and public policy at the University of Kentucky, will be the keynote speaker for the University of Georgia 24th Annual Louise McBee Lecture Nov. 1 at 11 a.m. in Mahler Auditorium of the UGA Hotel and Conference Center at the Georgia Center. The venue is a change from the Chapel, where the lecture was held for the previous 23 years.

Arthur Blank to speak at UGA fall undergraduate Commencement

Philanthropist Arthur M. Blank, co-founder of The Home Depot and owner of the Atlanta Falcons football franchise, will be the speaker for the University of Georgia fall 2012 undergraduate Commencement exercise Dec. 14 at 9:30 a.m. in Stegeman Coliseum. In addition, he will be awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree from UGA during the ceremony. Fran Teague, long-time UGA faculty member who holds a joint appointment in the department of English and the department of theatre and film studies, will speak at the graduate Commencement exercise at 2:30 p.m. in the same location.
