A graveyard for microfauna

The Associated Press quoted UGA marine scientist Samantha Joye in an article outlining the damage to the natural environment in the Gulf of Mexico six months after the oil rig explosion that caused the largest offshore spill in U.S. history.

“The fact that there isn’t living fauna is a signal that something happened to these sites and these sediments,” Joye said. “The horrible thing is they’ve been inundated with this oily material. . . There’re dead animals on the bottom, and it stinks to high heaven of oil.”
