Athens, Ga. – Jeremy Waldron, University Professor at the New York University School of Law, will deliver the University of Georgia School of Law’s 103rd Sibley Lecture Wednesday, March 5, at 3:30 p.m. in the School of Law’s Hatton Lovejoy Courtroom. This lecture, titled “The Concept and the Rule of Law,” is free and open to the public.
In his speech, Waldron will discuss law as a critical concept, not just a descriptive one, and why it is important to develop an understanding of law itself – of legal institutions, legal systems and legal propositions – which puts legality, or the Rule of Law, front and center.
A frequent lecturer all over the globe, Waldron has written and published extensively in the areas of jurisprudence and political theory, and several of his works on theories of rights, constitutionalism, democracy, property, torture and homelessness are well known, as is his work in historical political theory.
Waldron is the author of numerous books, including “God, Locke and Equality,” “Law and Disagreement” and “The Dignity of Legislation.” Additionally, he has written more than 100 articles and essays in legal and political philosophy and his work has been published in the Yale Law Journal, the Harvard Law Review, the Columbia Law Review and the Georgetown Law Journal.
After graduating from the University of Otago in New Zealand with degrees in philosophy and law in 1978, Professor Waldron earned his doctorate in legal philosophy from Oxford University, where he taught as a Darby Fellow of Lincoln College. He has served as a professor at the University of Edinburgh, the University of California at Berkeley, Princeton University and Columbia University. In 2006, he joined the New York University School of Law as University Professor.
Additionally, Waldron was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1998 and has received honorary doctorates in law from the University of Otago and the Catholic University of Brussels.
Established in 1964 by the Charles Loridans Foundation of Atlanta, the Sibley Lecture Series honors the late John A. Sibley, a 1911 graduate of the University of Georgia School of Law. The series hosts renowned legal academics known throughout the country for their exceptional scholarship.
