An English college president and former diplomat will speak at 4 p.m. April 19 in the Chapel. Sir Ivor Roberts, president of Trinity College in Oxford, England, and former British ambassador to Italy, Ireland and Yugoslavia, will give a lecture entitled “The Birth of Modern Diplomacy.” This event is free and open to the public.
“The experience and knowledge that Sir Ivor Roberts has amassed during his years of dedication to public service and education are unparalleled,” said UGA President Michael F. Adams. “I could not be more pleased that our students will have a chance to benefit from his experiences.”
Born in 1946 in Liverpool, England, Roberts worked in Her Majesty’s Diplomatic Service from 1968-2006, serving in Lebanon, Paris, Luxembourg, Canberra and Vanuatu. In addition he was minister in the British embassy in Madrid, Spain, and British ambassador in Belgrade, Serbia; Dublin, Ireland; and Rome, Italy.
Made a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in 2000, he was elected president of Trinity College in 2006.
“Sir Ivor Roberts is a distinguished diplomat,” said Thomas P. Lauth, dean of the School of Public and International Affairs. “I very much enjoyed meeting him in Oxford and look forward to welcoming him to the University of Georgia.”
Roberts’ visit is sponsored by UGA’s School of Public and International Affairs, the UGA at Oxford program and the Office of the President.
