U.C. San Diego tops ‘Washington Monthly’ college rankings report

The University of California, San Diego, earned the top spot in Washington Monthly’s college rankings, a list that prides itself on using a different method of determining college and university statuses to avoid the pitfalls that come from other ranking lists, the magazine reported.

The rankings are based on how well each institution promotes social mobility, furthers research and serves the country through military or peace-group participants. Seven of the top 10 spots were filled by public institutions, with three schools in the University of California system taking high positions as well as Jackson State University in Mississippi and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor rounding out the top 10.
