UGA department of dance to present Community Dance Celebration

Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia department of dance will present its Community Dance Celebration, an afternoon of free events aimed at sharing the joy of dance with the Athens community, on Oct. 7 in the dance building.

The Community Dance Celebration will include adult and children’s classes beginning at 1:15 p.m. in the dance studios. Concurrent offerings include beginning ballroom dance for ages 12 and up, creative movement for ages 5-8 and an informal talk on the technical and production aspects of dance performance.

An outdoor reception will be held at 2:15 p.m.

A family-oriented performance will begin at 3 p.m. The performance will feature the CORE Concert Dance Company, the UGA Ballet Ensemble, the Ballroom Performance Group and community guest performers from the East Athens Dance Center, Classic City Dance and UGA’s Swing Club.

“This open house is an opportunity for dance faculty, staff and students to join with the community in fun and engaging dance-related events and build community awareness of the dance department and its offerings,” said Rebecca Enghauser, associate professor in the department of dance. “With the body itself as the vehicle, dance has a unique and universal allure that can speak to each of us and fulfill us in a variety of ways. With this event, we hope to acknowledge for the Athens community that dance can be enjoyed as a lifelong passion.”

Parking for the event is available in the South Parking Deck. Parking in adjacent surface lots is free on the day of the event. Space for the event is limited, and tickets should be reserved through the Tate Center Box office at 706/542-8579.
