UGA to celebrate Women’s History Month throughout March

Athens, Ga. – “Women’s Education-Women’s Empowerment” is the national theme of Women’s History Month, which will be celebrated in March at the University of Georgia. Numerous events are planned, including a keynote address by Elizabeth Tisdell, a professor of adult education at Pennsylvania State University.

Tisdell is the author of Exploring Spirituality and Culture in Adult and Higher Education as well as the co-author of many other books and articles. She is also one of the first two students to receive a graduate certificate in women’s studies at UGA.

Her lecture, titled “Spiritual Development and the Pursuit of Wisdom in a Cultural Context: A Longitudinal Study of Women Adult Educators for Social Change” will take place March 22 at 3 p.m. in room 271 of the Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Libraries. A reception will follow in the rotunda. The lecture and reception are free and open to the public.

The month of events will kick off with a panel discussion featuring staff and recipients of the Jeannette Rankin Women’s Scholarship Fund on March 1 at 5:30 p.m. in room 214 of the Miller Learning Center. The discussion will focus on women’s education and women’s empowerment. The event is free and open to the public and is a blue card event.

The Institute for Women’s Studies also will host a film festival in honor of Women’s History Month. The screenings, also blue card events, are free and open to the public.

The Institute for Women’s Studies Friday Speaker Series will be collaborating with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in March. Each talk will be part of a Women’s History Month-themed course with the organization and will feature Diane Morrow, Sharon Nickols and Dr. Barbara Schuster. The lectures will take place at 12:20 p.m. in room 250 of the Miller Learning Center. A reception will follow each lecture in the Miller Learning Center north tower.
