UGA Week of Soul to feature journalist Jeff Johnson, comedians and movies

Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia’s annual Week of Soul celebration will bring a variety of activities and entertainment to the campus community beginning Feb. 13. The University Union Student Programming Board’s Committee for Black Cultural Programs will sponsor the week’s events.

Week of Soul begins on Feb. 13 with “Unclaimed Legacy: Who Will Lead the Next Social Movement?” a lecture by television journalist and motivational speaker Jeff Johnson. Johnson has appeared on the BET-TV programs “Rap City” and “The Truth with Jeff Johnson.” He is known for his insightful interviews with political and social leaders, including President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, Minister Louis Farrakhan and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa’s first elected female head of state and Liberia’s first female president.

The lecture will be held at 8 p.m. in the Tate Student Center Grand Hall. Admission is free for students with valid UGACards who pay activity fees on the Athens campus and $10 in advance/$15 the day of the show for non-students.

Vocal groups Committed and Afro-Blue Vocal Band from NBC-TV’s “The Sing Off” will perform Feb. 14 at 8 p.m. in the Tate Grand Hall. Admission is free for students and $10 in advance/$15 the day of the show for non-students.

The S.E.L.L.O.U.T Comedy Show, featuring comedians Billy D. Washington, Louis Johnson, Vince Morris and BT will be held Feb. 15 at 8 p.m. in the Tate Theater. The show uses humor and multiple points of view to confront black stereotypes. Tickets are free for students and $5 in advance/$10 the day of the show for non-students.

Spike Lee’s 1988 film “School Daze” will be shown Feb. 16 at 8 p.m. in the Tate Theater. Tickets are $1 for students and $2 for non-students.

Week of Soul concludes on Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. in the Tate Theater with a screening of the 2011 box office success “The Help” followed by dinner and a discussion of the film’s message. The event is co-sponsored by the African American Cultural Center and the PanHellenic Council. Tickets are free for students/$5 for non-students, and admission to the dinner is free with a movie ticket stub.

Event tickets are available at the Tate Student Center cashier window, which is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. A valid UGACard is required to acquire free student tickets.
