Athens, Ga. – IS3D LLC, creators of interactive software to teach scientific principles to students in grades K-12, received the “Startup of the Year for 2013” award presented by Four Athens.
Members of the greater Athens community submitted nominations for the inaugural award, which was presented during Four Athens’ annual Open House on Jan. 21. “Startup of the Year is given to the team that demonstrates growth, persistence, engagement and an overwhelming desire to succeed,” said Jim Flannery, project director for Four Athens (www.fourathens.com). The organization, which was formed to discover startups, build community, connect creativity, accelerate growth and invest in success, plans to give the award annually.
“We feel very honored to receive the award from Four Athens. The success of IS3D to date has truly been a team effort. This includes the founders, the talented young professionals who work their socks off every single day, and our partnering teachers and schools,” said Tom Robertson, CEO of IS3D LLC and an associate professor of physiology and pharmacology at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. “This is an exciting time to live in Athens, as Jim Flannery’s team at Four Athens has created an awesome community of local entrepreneurs. Our job now is to honor the award by pushing hard to develop IS3D into a successful company that contributes to the Athens economy and community.”
IS3D was founded in 2010 by eight UGA faculty and staff members who shared a dream of improving science comprehension and inspiring young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math, known as STEM fields. Through partnerships with more than a dozen school districts, IS3D’s team of artists, designers and programmers has developed a robust catalog of products based on student and teacher feedback, and the software has made many students excited about science for the first time. UGA College of Veterinary Medicine
The UGA College of Veterinary Medicine, founded in 1946, is dedicated to training future veterinarians, to conducting research related to animal and human diseases, and to providing veterinary services for animals and their owners. Research efforts are aimed at enhancing the quality of life for animals and people, improving the productivity of poultry and livestock, and preserving a healthy interface between wildlife and people in the environment they share.
