University of New Mexico returns artifacts to Mexican government

After determining that 18 ancient tools in its collection were stolen, officials at the University of New Mexico’s Maxwell Museum have returned the artifacts to the Mexican government, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported. Museum officials identified the artifacts, which date back more than 500 years, as having been illegally taken from Mexico in violation of a 1970 international law restricting the removal of artifacts from their home nation, and immediately returned them.
