“Cypress: Black Water Series” features work of Joseph Strother, Alumnus and Former UGA Art

ATHENS, Ga. – An exhibition of the work of Joseph Strother, titled “Cypress: Black Water Series,” will run from July 10 through Aug. 8 at the Broad Street Gallery in Athens. An opening reception will be held on Thurs., July 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public. The gallery is operated by the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art.

Strother graduated from UGA with a doctorate in art education in 1969 and taught at UGA’s art school from 1967 until 1975. He left UGA to return to his home state of Louisiana to serve as the director of the School of Art and Architecture at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, La.

The works featured in “Cypress: Black Water Series” are representative of more than 200 drawings and paintings Strother produced from 1985 to 1996. The works are Strother’s response to the beauty and mystery of the black water swamps of northeastern Louisiana.

The Broad Street Gallery is located at 257 W. Broad Street and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., free of charge.
